Conference on African swine fever with hunters

The European Commission's Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) together with European Federation for Hunting and Conservation (FACE) is organising a conference entitled: "Preparing European hunters to eradicate African swine fever".

The event will serve as a follow up to the political discussions on African swine fever (ASF) in the EU that took place on 19 of December 2018 in Brussels at the Ministerial Conference ("Eradication of African swine fever in the EU and the long-term management of wild boar populations").

The conference was held in Dortmund on 30 January 2019, in the margin of the Europe's largest hunting exhibition "Jagd & Hund". Invited participants include the representatives of European hunting associations, representatives of veterinary and environmental services of the EU Member States, representatives of European industry, scientific organisations.

The main goal of the event is to highlight the key role of hunters to prevent, control and eradicate ASF. A long-term management of wild boar population and increased coordination between veterinary services, farmers, forestry management bodies and hunters is needed to efficiently control and prevent the spreading of the disease.

Therefore, cooperation on the management of the disease from both the agricultural and environmental side is essential.
