About the group

In March 2022, the sub-group on the welfare of poultry was established within the EU Platform on Animal Welfare.

The sub-group will provide technical expertise and opinions to the Commission on the ways the Union's instruments can be adapted to improve the welfare of poultry at farm level. This includes taking into account the latest scientific evidence, the objective to phase out cages and the need to make the legislation better enforceable.

The sub-group will focus on the welfare of certain poultry species and categories, including laying hens, pullets, broilers, layer and broiler breeders, ducks, geese and quail.

The discussion will be of a consultative nature and will participate in the preparation by the Commission of a legislative proposal revising Directive 1999/74/EC, Directive 2007/43/EC and Directive 98/58/EC.

The composition of the working group is available in the Register of the Commission expert groups.
