Significant Advances in EU Plant Health Emergency Preparedness, but Concerns remain, says New Report

A new Commission study shows how, as foreseen in the ongoing legislative revision related to the welfare of animals during transport, digital tools can simplify and optimise the work of operators and competent authorities when implementing and enforcing EU animal transport rules.

The Commission has authorised a genetically modified (GM) soybean for use as food and animal feed. This follows a scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority, which concluded that the GM soybean is as safe as its non-GM counterpart.

The monthly report includes "non-compliances with fraud suspicions". Those non-compliances are not confirmed frauds but contribute alerting and triggering investigations by Member States competent authorities.

On the occasion of The International Day of Plant Health (IDPH), the 2026 edition of the Plant Health for Life campaign is launched – the final year of this multiannual initiative promoting awareness and shared responsibility for plant health.

EFSA republished its scientific opinion on the renewal application for authorisation of genetically modified soybean MON 87769 for food and feed uses (GMFF-2023-21253) on 8 May 2026. The public may make comments for one month.

A new EFSA statement on genetically modified oilseed rape for food and feed uses has been published on 13 April 2026. In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 on genetically modified food and feed, the public may make comments on this opinion for 1 month.
