About the day
The United Nations General Assembly designated 29 September as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW). The day is co-convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the day's events are led jointly by the two organisations.
The goal is to raise awareness to the importance of the problem and its possible solutions at all levels, and to promote global efforts and collective action towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3, which targets to halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030, and reduce food losses along the food production and supply chains.
The European Commission welcomes this initiative and joins FAO, UNEP and other relevant organisations in the global call to action against food loss and waste.

In order to mark this day, the Commission proposed a series of visuals about the impacts of food waste (e.g. financial, environmental, social) and benefits of reducing food waste. The visuals were available in different formats, for different social media channels. The Commission invited all stakeholders to circulate the materials with their networks and help raise awareness about ways to reduce food waste.

For the second observance of the IDAFLW on 29 September 2021, FAO and UNEP issued a call to action for both the public (national or local authorities) and the private (businesses) sectors, as well as individuals, to prioritize actions and move ahead with innovation to reduce food loss and waste towards restoring and building back better and resilient-ready, food systems.
In order to mark the IDAFLW in 2021, the Commission launched a new website, the EU Food Loss and Waste Prevention Hub.
The new website aims to be a “one-stop-shop” for information on food waste prevention in the EU, allowing all stakeholders active in food loss and waste prevention and reduction to share best practices (resources database), find relevant information (such as policy and legislative developments - Member States pages) and stay up-to-date with the latest news. The main objective of this platform is to foster the exchange of knowledge and experience and to help disseminate the different initiatives carried out to tackle food losses and food waste, in order to inspire and drive further action on the ground, across the EU and beyond.
Join us and help us build a growing community of experts and practitioners, working towards the Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 Target!
