About the Food Fraud Network

Cooperation between officials with EU agri-food chain knowledge, police and customs officers with investigative powers, judges and prosecutors administrations is of the utmost importance either at national level or at EU level.

The Food Fraud Network is a network composed of the Commission, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol), the liaison bodies designated by the Member States, and where relevant, the European Union’s Judicial Cooperation Unit (Eurojust).

Since 2013, EU Member States and some other European countries (Switzerland, Norway and Iceland) exchange information and cooperate in matters where they are confronted with violations of the EU agri-food chain legislation of a cross-border nature. It helps the EU Member States and some other European countries to work in accordance with the rules laid down in the Official Controls Regulation.

The EU Food Fraud Network allows assisting and coordinating communication between competent authorities and, in particular, transmitting and receiving requests for assistance. The liaisons bodies are required to exchange information necessary to enable the verification of compliance with EU agri-food chain legislation with their counterparts and, in certain cases, with the Commission, where the results of official controls require action in more than one country.

The EU Food Fraud Network: a cooperative approach based on trust

The EU Food Fraud Network works in close consultation with the EC Knowledge Centre for Food Fraud, which provides expertise in food science, including research on the authenticity and quality of food supplied in the EU.

The EU Food Fraud Network is also engaged in joint operations with the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) targeting fake and substandard food and beverages and counterfeit pesticides.
