Anyone intending to introduce GMOs into the environment for experimental purposes must first get authorisation from the relevant national authority in the country where the release is planned.
The national authority is responsible for making a decision on the release based on an environmental risk assessment and an assessment of the health risks according to the rules in Part B of Directive 2001/18/EC - Deliberate release of GMOs for any other purpose than for placing on the market.
A list of the notifications submitted to the EU countries' Competent Authorities under Part B of Directive 2001/18/EC is available on the European Commission website, for GM plants and for GMOs other than plants.
A report on the implementation of Field trials can be found here.
